CSR Smart contains a sweetener, how can this product be natural?
The new sweetener that is finely blended with raw sugar to make the new natural CSR Smart is based on extracts derived from Stevia.

What is Stevia?
Stevia rebaudiana is a plant or herb belonging to the chrysanthemum family which grows to almost 1 metre in height. Native to South and Central America, it is now grown in over 20 countries. The leaves have traditionally been used as a sweetener. The leaves of Stevia rebaudiana contain 10 different steviol glycosides. Steviol glycosides are considered high intensity sweeteners (250-300 times that of sucrose or sugar) and have been approved for use for several years in a number of countries as sweeteners for a range of food products. In particular, Japan has used Stevia as its main non-sucrose sweetener source for more than 30 years. Other countries which allow the use of steviol glycosides include China, Russia, Korea, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Indonesia and Israel.

Is the Stevia sweetener used in CSR Smart safe?
Stevia has been thoroughly assessed by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) in 2008 prior to its approval for use. FSANZ conducted a comprehensive risk assessment prior to approving addition of Stevia to the Australian food supply and concluded that steviol glycosides are well tolerated and unlikely to have adverse effects on health (blood pressure, blood glucose or other parameters in normal, hypotensive or diabetic subjects) at doses up to 11 mg/kg body weight (bw) per day. They specifically examined any potential adverse risk to children and concluded “there are no public health and safety concerns for steviol glycosides when used as a food additive at the maximum levels proposed”.

Is CSR Smart suitable for those with diabetes?
As less is required, fewer calories are acquired. This helps those with diabetes to watch their waistlines.

Is CSR Smart safe to give to young children/ when pregnant/ breast feeding etc?

Is CSR Smart available in different sugar variants e.g. brown sugar, icing sugar etc..?
CSR Smart is currently available as a fine raw sugar blend (500g pack) and as a white sugar blend (500g pack).

How can CSR Smart be used in cooking recipes? Can it be heated/used in baking?
CSR Smart is heat stable and is therefore suitable as a low calorie alternative in both hot and cold recipes. However, because CSR Smart Sugar Blends are twice as sweet so you use half as much, you can't simply replace the sugar with the same quantity of Smart. CSR have therefore developed a range of delicious recipes using the new Smart White and Smart Raw Sugar Blends, so you can enjoy great tasting, lighter treats. These recipes are available when you log in here.
